Small Clothes, Big Impact
A Changing Fashion Industry – The fashion industry is becoming faster, cheaper, and more short-lived. The term “fast fashion” describes a system built to constantly produce new collections – often at the expense of the environment, working conditions, and quality. Cheaply produced children’s clothing may look appealing at first glance, but it’s often made under precarious conditions, with low wages and minimal environmental standards. As a result, quality suffers – seams come undone quickly, fabrics lose their shape, and a shirt that’s only been worn a few times ends up in the trash or in a clothing donation bin, from where it is often exported to other countries or incinerated. So how can families make more responsible choices?
Fair Production – The good news is: there are more and more alternatives. Fairly produced fashion is also a major topic in the world of children’s clothing. It includes environmentally friendly materials, better working conditions, and transparent supply chains. Certifications help parents make informed choices when shopping. Small local labels and start-ups are also driving change, offering thoughtful cuts, renewable raw materials, and high-quality craftsmanship. One such example is Nadine Motiwalla, who founded the fashion label Schaatzi together with her friend. Since 2021, the clothing has been produced under fair conditions in Portugal – with a strong focus on sustainability, quality, and skilled workmanship. The collection features durable fabrics and charming oversized designs. The colorful, comfortable pieces are made for little explorers – timeless, high-quality, and with a touch of playful ease.
In collaboration with Familux Resorts – a provider of 5-star family vacations – an exclusive collection for “Little Explorer” was created. It includes baby rompers, elegant beanies, cozy socks, stylish leggings, and wonderfully soft sweaters and sweatpants.
Thinking Ahead – When worn by only one child, the life cycle of high-quality clothing is often far from over. Secondhand has become socially acceptable – and for good reason. Beautiful pre-loved items help conserve resources. Many families organize clothing swaps with friends, use online platforms, or browse children’s flea markets. The topic of upcycling – creatively reusing and repurposing worn clothing – is also growing in popularity. It’s also important to note that children can learn early on that fashion doesn’t always have to be new to be beautiful. Those who involve their children in the process – when selecting, caring for, and passing on clothes – are teaching values like mindfulness, responsibility, and creativity. After all, sustainable consumption starts small. Children’s clothing is more than just fabric. It reflects care, lifestyle, and forward thinking. Choosing, buying, and passing on clothes more mindfully not only helps to relieve the burden on the environment – it also sets an example that leaves a lasting impression on children. And perhaps that is where the greatest impact lies.
Making Conscious Choices – Less is more: instead of buying ten cheap shirts, it’s better to invest in three high-quality ones that can be enjoyed for much longer. Paying attention to quality – strong seams, durable materials, and clear care instructions – is essential. Supporting sustainable labels is also key: brands that produce fairly and transparently deserve our purchasing decisions. Repair rather than discard – a small hole can be quickly stitched up or patched with a favorite motif, keeping the item in circulation longer. Swap, pass on, or sell – what no longer fits one child may be just right for a younger sibling or the child of a close friend.
